Farmers, ranchers and producers are often too buys with other aspects of the agriculture industry to go to livestock sales in order to buy livestock. In such circumstances farmers, ranchers and producers often hire livestock buyers to go to livestock sales and auctions to buy livestock for them. Different livestock buyers specialize in buying different livestock. Some livestock buyers specialize in buying feeder cattle while others specialize in buying dairy cows. Some livestock buyers specialize in buying hogs while others specialize in buying sheep or goats. Some livestock buyers specialize in buying more exotic livestock such as buffalo, ostrich and llamas. Some livestock buyers work for stockyards and meatpackers but most are contractors who work primarily for farmers, ranchers and producers.

To find a livestock buyer or broker search the Internet or look in a phone book to find listings of those that are local to you. Call and ask how much they will pay for cattle, swine, or poultry. If they are selling farm animals you can ask how much they're asking for bison, horses, pigs, llamas, sheep, and goats. Call several buyers and brokers to see what the average price is. If you're looking to buy farm animals you will want to arrange to see the animals in person to get a look at their condition and make sure they're exactly what you're looking for. Ask to see any paperwork that proves that the animals are organic if this is a requirement of yours. If you're trying to sell organic farm animals you will need to have the proof to show the livestock buyer and broker for them to pay the extra money. Meat and dairy animals will need to follow certain requirements in order to be labeled organic. Therefore they may be more expensive than your other options. Feed for animals will still need to be carefully examined to make sure they are not eating anything dangerous. Agricultural auctions can be a great place to find farm animals for breeding since it may work out to be cheaper than if you were to buy directly through an agent. However, agents will work with you to make sure you're buying or selling the item you want. Before you make the sale final of cattle or swine ask around to see if you can get a better deal or if you find a more reputable agent to work with. This may help you save money when buying animals or make more when selling.
